The National Honor Society was established in 1921 to recognize the highest achieving and most involved high school students across the nation. The mission of the National Honor Society both then, and now, is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in secondary students. Junior and senior students with a weighted cumulative average of 90 and who have a demonstrated record of good character, leadership, and service were invited to apply for membership. A five member Faculty Selection Council then reviewed the activity portfolios, teacher evaluations, academic, attendance, and disciplinary records of the applicants. During this process, names are removed from all records to ensure confidentiality and impartiality. Such selection process is in full compliance with those as recommended by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the governing body of Student Activities in the United States.

The following students earned membership into the National Honor Society this year: Myles Becker, Allyson Bouchard, Hayley Boutoute, Hillary Brown, Antonia Brunetti, Kristen Byrnes, Kristina Bystrak, Tamara Bystrak, Zach Cipriano, Paul Couture, Lisa Dolan, Ryan Fennell, Meg Firmani, Caitlin Forte, Mike France, Dom Gambino, Ashley Hebert, Ryan Houlihan, Brandon Kulak, Shea Marsella, Taylor Mazurski, Marissa McCann, Jessica McHugh, CJ Monroe, Mitchell Mordarski, Shannon Murphy, Cara Nelson, Jake Petillo, Zach Plourde, Brian Quilter, Samantha Rinaldi, Kriston Ronalter, Scott Rossignol, Alex Roth, Mike Roy, Harvinder Somra, Danielle Spino, Adam Swatt, Nick Tamburini, and Jennifer Warren

The induction ceremony included a candle lighting ceremony and an explanation of the four cardinal principles of the National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Remarks were made by National Honor Society President Iona Brockie, Wolcott High School Principal Dr. Robert Eberle, and Superintendent Mr. Macary. Many proud parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and Board of Education members were in attendance. Wolcott High School nurse Kathy Fawcett was selected by the current members of the Honor Society as this year’s honorary inductee. Mrs. Fawcett was selected because of her dedication and commitment to the students of Wolcott High School. She can be seen every morning doing a dance routine in the hallways of the high school, welcoming tired students in. She is a friend, mentor and surrogate parent to many of our students. She is retiring this year and will be greatly missed.

After the formal ceremony was over, the current members of the Honor Society performed skits to bring the principles of the Honor Society to life in a fun and memorable way. This has been a tradition since the first induction ceremony in 1960. This year the students really outdid themselves as they wrote and performed their own rendition of The Bachelor: NHS Edition. The current members of the National Honor Society are: Rebecca Albini, Dan Arsenault, Brianna Bartoli, Chris Bendtsen, Samantha Bly, Iona Brockie, Jessica Carichner, Coree Charette, Andrew Cipriano, Elizabeth DeVitto, Gina DiVirgilio, Inacio Dias, Jamie Fusco, Brianne Giordano, Robert Giordano, Taylor Gleason, Noor Hadir, Rich Hegeman, Maryam Iftikar, Karyssa Keely, Jessica Legasse, Sarah Lounsbury, Susan Mantiglia, Emily Manzolino, Joe Paquette, Nick Pietroniro, Jamille Rancourt, Rachael Rocco, Chelsey Rodriguez, Shawn Rodriquez, Jackie Rosa, Farrah Saleh, Marisa Santopietro, Rachel Spagnoletti, Alyssa Testa, and Shenaye Thomas.

The Honor Society is advised by Michelle Thies and Deborah Witek. The Honor Society will finish out the year by sponsoring several scholarships to be given out at Senior Awards Night, helping the Student Council with their annual Senior Citizen’s Prom and electing officers for next year. Congratulations to all the new inductees and the outgoing members of the National Honor Society!

SkillsUSA members competed in the 33rd annual Statesman & On January 10th we visited the Bristol Soup Kitchen and helped prepare and serve a hot dinner to over one hundred people. Beginning February 1 and running through the 4th, the club collected donations for Haiti. Thank you to everyone who donated and especially to the Community Service Club volunteers who made posters, read announcements and collected donations during their lunch! Wolcott High School students and staff donated $320.00 during the “Hats on for Haiti” event which was forwarded to the International Red Cross. These donations, along with others from around the country, will help to provide assistance to earthquake survivors.

National Honor Society News

National Honor Society News
By Rachel Spagnoletti, Public Relations Officer

The Wolcott High School National Honor Society is greatly involved in the Wolcott community. Starting in October, NHS members volunteered at the WHS Open House where they assisted both teachers and parents. Each member was assigned to a specific teacher and monitored how long the meetings were to ensure that all parents had time to meet with teachers. They were also there to give directions to parents.
In November, members held an Election Day Bake Sale fundraiser. All of the goods were homemade by NHS students. Everything from cupcakes, to brownies, to muffins, and cakes could be found at the Bake Sale. All money raised went towards the annual NHS Holiday Party for students with special needs. We would like to thank all of the citizens who supported our efforts by buying baked goods on Election Day!
December was a very busy month as NHS members helped out at Eighth Grade Orientation. We led tours of the school for interested parents and students. The eighth graders enjoyed themselves and showed excitement for their upcoming first year of high school. Later on in the month, the NHS hosted its annual party for students with special needs, a tradition dating back more than 30 years. The students had a fantastic time playing games and doing crafts with NHS students. They also got a visit from Santa who brought them stockings stuffed with holiday goodies. It was an enjoyable time for all.
The National Honor Society has big plans for the remainder of the year. We will be partnering with Student Council to help out with the Senior Citizens Prom in the Spring. In March, NHS members will run the craft table at the RIEB Bookswap. March and April will also be very busy as members will be planning the induction ceremony for the next generation of NHS members. The induction ceremony will be April 14th and it is always an entertaining night because members choose a theme and act out skits portraying the four main characteristics of a NHS member: character, service, scholarship, and leadership. NHS members will also be selling delicious products from Pasta Heaven to raise money for the various scholarships the organization gives out on Senior Awards Night in May. Also in May, the NHS will end the year by taking a trip to Newport to tour the Breakers.

Athletic News

At the CIAC Class M meet on Friday, Chris Bendtsen of Wolcott, who won the 3,200 in a Class M record 9:19.87, beat his greatest rival, John Raneri of New Fairfield (9:20.80). “We bring the best times out of each other,” said Raneri.

Also our cheerleaders won the competition on Saturday February 13 at the CT Convention Center in Hartford

Great job!

Wolcott High School will present the Taylor Hooton foundation

Wolcott High School will present the Taylor Hooton foundation on March 3rd at 6:45. Clearly his academic standing has been as important to Bendtsen as his personal-best times and victories.

“My parents always told me that school comes first,” said Bendtsen, selected as the Republican-American's Top Male Scholar-Athlete for the 2009 fall season.

Proving that, Bendtsen visited five Ivy League schools before settling on Princeton University, where he will major in economics.

“Princeton will give me unlimited possibilities for my future,” said Bendtsen, 17. “It was a tough decision, but I feel I made the right one.”

Making an immediate impact on the Tigers' cross country team would be ideal, but Bendtsen is taking a realistic approach.

“I am 100 percent ready to go to Princeton and I know there will be a lot of smart people and talented runners and I will not stick out right away,” he said.

Still, Bendtsen is treating the opportunity no different from when he entered high school.

“I like the challenge of trying to overcome it,” said Bendtsen. “I won't be the big name or come in as the best guy and will be in the back of the pack. I know I'll have to work to get myself where I want to be.”

Just like in high school.

Community Service Club

The Community Service Club is already off to a great start in 2010. On January 10th we visited the Bristol Soup Kitchen and helped prepare and serve a hot dinner to over one hundred people. Beginning February 1 and running through the 4th, the club will be collecting money for Haiti. Donations of any amount are welcome, but donations over two dollars will allow students to wear a hat to school on Friday, February 5th. The money collected from “Hats on for Haiti” will be given to the International Red Cross and sent directly to where it is needed most. If everyone works together, Wolcott High School can give a helping hand to Haiti in its time of need.

Welcome To The Cast OF Beatlemania

WOLCOTT HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Michael R. We would like to include some personal information about the people all of our “memorial” scholarships honor, and we need the help of our very generous contributors and the public.
If you, your family, or your organization provides a “memorial” scholarship for the WHS Senior Awards Night, please consider writing up a brief 3-4 sentence paragraph about the person you honor to include in our program book. Or, if you are related to someone who is honored with a memorial scholarship and have information about them, please consider sharing it with us.
Please contact Roberta Leonard at 203-879-4310, who is helping us to gather the information. You can submit your write-up by mail or email; simply contact Roberta to arrange it. The presentations centered on trust, accountability, creativity and strategic planning.

At the conference, Wolcott’s DECA Chapter was acknowledged both for achieving 100% chapter membership and for its performance on the 2009 state assessments. />

As a part of a Graphic Design project, students in Mrs. Miele’s Visual Communications classes had to design a Profile folder that would represent Wolcott High School. This folder will be used for seniors applying to colleges all around the country. The Profile gives colleges a picture of Wolcott High School and what is offered to our students.
The challenge of this project was to be able to design a folder that would be appropriate for the admissions departments of colleges, not something that the students would design for themselves. The folder needed to show the best of Wolcott High School in one quick glance.
After days of hard work by the Visual Communications students, the Wolcott High School guidance counselors went through every folder until they found the one that they thought represented our school the best. A senior (who wishes to remain anonymous) from Mrs. Miele’s Visual Communications I class was chosen. His hard work paid off and he is honored that his work will represent Wolcott High School.

Written by: JW, Visual Communications Student
