National Honor Society News
By Rachel Spagnoletti, Public Relations Officer
The Wolcott High School National Honor Society is greatly involved in the Wolcott community. Starting in October, NHS members volunteered at the WHS Open House where they assisted both teachers and parents. Each member was assigned to a specific teacher and monitored how long the meetings were to ensure that all parents had time to meet with teachers. They were also there to give directions to parents.
In November, members held an Election Day Bake Sale fundraiser. All of the goods were homemade by NHS students. Everything from cupcakes, to brownies, to muffins, and cakes could be found at the Bake Sale. All money raised went towards the annual NHS Holiday Party for students with special needs. We would like to thank all of the citizens who supported our efforts by buying baked goods on Election Day!
December was a very busy month as NHS members helped out at Eighth Grade Orientation. We led tours of the school for interested parents and students. The eighth graders enjoyed themselves and showed excitement for their upcoming first year of high school. Later on in the month, the NHS hosted its annual party for students with special needs, a tradition dating back more than 30 years. The students had a fantastic time playing games and doing crafts with NHS students. They also got a visit from Santa who brought them stockings stuffed with holiday goodies. It was an enjoyable time for all.
The National Honor Society has big plans for the remainder of the year. We will be partnering with Student Council to help out with the Senior Citizens Prom in the Spring. In March, NHS members will run the craft table at the RIEB Bookswap. March and April will also be very busy as members will be planning the induction ceremony for the next generation of NHS members. The induction ceremony will be April 14th and it is always an entertaining night because members choose a theme and act out skits portraying the four main characteristics of a NHS member: character, service, scholarship, and leadership. NHS members will also be selling delicious products from Pasta Heaven to raise money for the various scholarships the organization gives out on Senior Awards Night in May. Also in May, the NHS will end the year by taking a trip to Newport to tour the Breakers.
